Laura Badertscher
b. 1983, Swiss-Australian
Lives and works in Zurich
Laura Badertscher moved to Australia in 2010 and began her art education in 2013 at the National Art School in Sydney. In 2014, she participated in an exchange program, spending a semester at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) before returning to Australia to complete her BFA in Painting. She earned her Master of Fine Arts at the National Art School, Sydney, in 2018. At the start of 2019, after nearly a decade living in the land Down Under, she returned to Zurich and established her studio.
The Shape of Things brings together new paintings in which figures, clouds, and landscapes become new realities. Interpersonal relationships, romantic projections, and fleeting encounters appear as fragile constellations between closeness and distance. Drawing on visual sources from art history, popular media, and everyday life, Badertscher develops a style of painting in which iconic motifs meet banal or absurd situations. At the same time, the focus shifts to painting itself: from paint on wood or canvas, illusions of bodies, spaces, and atmospheres, emerge images that create their own reality.
